After a few days being home from the amazing week of helping out in medical clinics in the Philippines, we find we have been asked why we go...do we really see the power of God? What keeps us returning again and again to these beautiful people? The stories we share are about real individuals, precious people who are able to experience God's love and compassion through us, maybe for the first time. Could there be anything more valuable and thrilling to be a part of?
"Vivian" -On our final day of clinic, a spry and spunky lady in her 80's sat down with us. As she opened her mouth to speak we couldn't help but notice her teeth were completly rotten, a few dangling like they might fall out any minute. We asked her about it and she said she chews "beetle nut," a mild stimulant much like caffiene. Unfortunately this badly stains your teeth. She was too scared to see the dentist so we asked her if she would like a toothbrush. I snuck one out of the dental clinic for her and put it in her hands. She just stared down at the brush and mini toothpaste finally admitting she had no idea what to do with it. Royal so sweetly showed this precious grandma how to put a dab of paste on the brush and gently brush up and down. We are not sure if "Vivian" will use it but she knew she was loved and cared for by our team!
Around lunch time someone came inside and said there was a class of 17 children waiting to see Dr. Royal. These students, age 6-13 had heard of our free clinics and walked 2 hours over the mountains with the hope of some relief. Royal came alive at the challenge and starting going down the whole row checking eyes, throats, skin and hair. I was frantically writing down his diagnosis for each one - lice, lice, lice....scabies, scabies, scabies....turns out all had lice, scabies and a need for vitamins. They each were prayed for and enjoyed some fun with our interns! As they marched off over the green mountains they could look forward to relief and renewed strength, as well as the knowledge that they are loved!
But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? Romans 10:14-15
We each have the privilege of being part of bringing God's saving love and care to all the people on earth. Many of the people we meet on these trips have never had a follower of Jesus show them kindness. Instead they have known great animosity, discrimination and outright hostility. When we tell them we have come because of the love of God and pray for miracles, we do see the power of Father God transforming hearts to know Him in His truth and love. We can see the light pushing back against the darkness of hopelessness and disease. God is still inviting and sending all of us, his followers to the great adventure of demonstrating His immeasurable love to a hurting world. How will you join in today?
